Ndutu — The Great Migration Calving Season

Ndutu / Serengeti

Today is the centrepiece of the safari. An early morning game drive takes you into the Ndutu area of the Southern Serengeti, where from January to March, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest flood the short-grass plains to give birth. Witnessing a birth — and the predator drama that follows — is one of the most visceral wildlife encounters on Earth. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and leopards move through dense herds in concentrated numbers rarely seen elsewhere. Your guide will track the migration closely, positioning you for the best sightings. You may even take a bush lunch among the herds. Overnight at Sero Tented Camp inside the Serengeti ecosystem.

Ngorongoro Crater — The World's Greatest Wildlife Arena

Ngorongoro Crater

The final day descends into the Ngorongoro Crater — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Its 260 sq km floor is home to approximately 25,000 animals in a self-contained ecosystem: black rhino, dense lion prides, vast wildebeest and zebra herds, hippos in the lakes, flamingos on the soda flats, and buffalos everywhere. Game viewing here is exceptional in any season, with wildlife density unmatched anywhere in Africa. In the late afternoon you'll drive back to Arusha, arriving in time for your onward connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before booking

When is the Ndutu calving season?
The calving season in Ndutu (Southern Serengeti) peaks from late January through March. During this time, hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth on the short-grass plains — making it one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on Earth, with predators in close pursuit.
Will I see the Great Migration on this safari?
Yes — the calving season IS the Great Migration in the south. January–March sees the herds flood the Ndutu plains as females give birth. You'll witness wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle births alongside lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunting in concentrated numbers rarely seen anywhere else in Africa.
What makes the Ngorongoro Crater so special?
The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its 260 sq km floor holds roughly 25,000 animals including one of Tanzania's last populations of black rhino, dense lion prides, vast wildebeest and zebra herds, hippos, flamingos, and buffalos — all in a single, self-contained ecosystem.
Is this safari suitable for first-time visitors?
Absolutely. This itinerary is designed to deliver maximum wildlife impact without overwhelming driving distances. Our local guides are experienced at matching the pace and depth of information to your experience level — whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned safari traveller.
What visa do I need for Tanzania?
Most nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australian and many others) require a visa for Tanzania, applied online at evisa.immigration.go.tz before travel. The tourist visa costs approximately $50 USD and allows a 90-day stay. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country.
Can I add Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro to this safari?
Yes — this is one of our most popular combinations. A 3–5 night Zanzibar beach extension pairs perfectly at the end of any safari. Kilimanjaro climbs (Lemosho, Machame, or Marangu routes) can be added before or after. We handle all logistics for a seamless Tanzania adventure.
