Kilimanjaro's most scenic and successful route to Uhuru Peak — 70km across rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and glacial summit. 94%+ success rate. Expert local guides from Arusha.
The Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro is widely regarded as the finest path to Africa's highest summit — and for good reason. It begins on the remote western flank of the mountain at Londorossi Gate, taking climbers through pristine rainforest where black-and-white colobus monkeys move through the canopy overhead and exotic moss drapes every branch. From there, the trail crosses the extraordinary Shira Plateau — the remnant of Kilimanjaro's ancient third volcanic peak — before joining the Southern Circuit to approach Uhuru Peak from the east.
What sets the Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro apart from every other path on the mountain is its acclimatisation profile. The route is deliberately designed to ascend gradually, giving your body the time it needs to adapt to the thinning air. The famous climber's motto — "climb high, sleep low" — is built into multiple days of the Lemosho itinerary. Independent data from Altezza Travel puts the Lemosho 7-day summit success rate at 94.9% — the highest of any standard Kilimanjaro route.
At Mujuni African Adventures, every Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route climb is guided by experienced Tanzanian mountain guides who have made this journey dozens of times. They know every campsite, every weather pattern, and exactly how to pace a group for summit success. This is not a generic group climb. Your team is selected specifically for you, your fitness level, and your summit goals.
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport. Our team transfers you to your hotel in Moshi — the gateway town to the mountain. This evening we hold a comprehensive pre-trek briefing: your guide reviews your equipment, explains the itinerary in detail, and arranges any gear rental you may need. You should plan to arrive at least one full day before the climb begins.
After breakfast, drive approximately 3–4 hours to Londorossi Park Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro National Park. From here a forest track leads to Lemosho Glades — the true trailhead of the Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro. Walk along forest trails to Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) campsite. The rainforest here is extraordinary — ancient moss-draped trees, colobus monkeys overhead, the sound of birds you have never heard before. This is where the adventure truly begins.
The trail steepens as you leave the rainforest and enter the giant heather moorland zone. After crossing several streams you continue over the Shira Ridge — the remnant of Kilimanjaro's ancient third volcanic peak — and on to Shira 2 Camp on the open moorland meadows. Your first real views of the Kibo peak appear today. The landscape is extraordinary: alien-looking giant groundsels and lobelias found nowhere else on earth line the path.
From the Shira Plateau, continue east up a ridge passing the junction toward Kibo peak. Your direction shifts southeast toward the Lava Tower — called the "Shark's Tooth" at 4,650m — before descending to Barranco Camp. Although you end the day at roughly the same elevation you started, this is one of the most important days on the Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 7 days itinerary. The climb-high-sleep-low acclimatisation cycle here is a critical reason why Lemosho's summit success rate is among the highest on the mountain.
One of the most exciting days on the Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro climb. After breakfast, the route tackles the famous Barranco Wall — a steep, hands-on scramble up a dramatic volcanic face that rewards with panoramic views of the Southern Ice Fields above and the plains of Tanzania far below. The climb requires no technical mountaineering equipment but is exhilarating. From the top, continue along the ridge to Karanga Valley and the junction connecting to the Mweka Trail.
Continue up to Barafu Camp — your launch point for the summit. You have now completed the full Southern Circuit of Kilimanjaro, which offers views of the summit from every angle. The landscape at this elevation is stark, rocky, and beautiful in its austerity. Rest this afternoon, eat a good dinner, and prepare your gear carefully. Your guide will wake you between midnight and 2am for the summit attempt.
The summit day. Departing between midnight and 2am, your guides lead you between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers in a northwesterly ascent through heavy scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most demanding section — cold, dark, and physically and mentally challenging. At Stella Point, you pause for rest and are rewarded with what many describe as the most magnificent sunrise of their lives.
From Stella Point, one final hour through snow and ice leads to Uhuru Peak — 5,895 metres above sea level, the highest point in Africa. The moment you arrive at the summit sign is one you will carry with you permanently. After photographs and celebration, descend to Barafu Camp for lunch and continue down to Mweka Camp for your final overnight on the mountain. Summit success rates on this route exceed 94% with proper preparation.
After breakfast, make the final descent through forest to Mweka Park Gate to receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate. At lower elevations the trail can be wet and muddy — gaiters and trekking poles will help. Your Mujuni vehicle will be waiting at the gate for the drive back to your hotel in Moshi (approximately 60 minutes). Rest, shower, and celebrate — you have climbed the highest mountain in Africa.
